Lake Tahoe’s Black Wall to Get a Makeover

Black Wall is one of the most iconic climbing areas in the Lake Tahoe region. In 2015, Access Fund partnered with Truckee Donner Land Trust to help purchase this historic crag from a private landowner. As part of the partnership, Access Fund holds a conservation easement on the property to ensure climbing is welcomed forever.

This summer, the Access Fund-Jeep Conservation Team is working alongside Truckee Donner Land Trust, local climbers, and community volunteers to reshape and restore this iconic crag. Approach trails at the historic crag are suffering from severe braiding and erosion, making them hard to follow. And the staging area at the base of the One Hand Clapping area is literally fall apart, leading to safety and environmental concerns.

The Conservation Team West crew is leading AmeriCorps Conservation Crews and volunteers through a number of projects to improve sustainability of this popular climbing area. They will be design and build a new access loop trail, featuring large stone staircases at both the north and south entrance points. They will also work to restore and reinforce the staging area at One Hand Clapping to address the severe erosion.

The Conservation Team crew would love help with these projects, and they welcome volunteers every Saturday through June and July. Keep an eye on our events calendar for details.
