As climbers, we’re drawn to big challenges, whether we’re projecting our first 5.10, taking on a big wall, or pushing hard for a remote peak. Overcoming challenge is key to who we are.
Today, I’m writing to you with a different type of challenge—one that is bigger than just climbing. One that asks us to put aside our individual pursuits, just for a moment, in the name of something bigger.
You don’t have to be a climate scientist to recognize that the world around us is changing. Flooding, wildfires, landslides, and record heat are changing when, where, and how we climb. These challenges are introducing new dangers and new restrictions to the climbing experience. And if we’re going to confront them, we have to go big.
I’ve seen firsthand the work that Access Fund is doing to protect the lands we love and keep the gates to climbing open. It’s incredibly impressive. But as threats to the land increase, they need our help to continue this critical work.
Pass laws to protect public lands, advance climate action, and sustainably manage recreation.
Put Conservation Teams in the field to restore more climbing areas and help them adapt.
Buy more threatened climbing landscapes to save them from development.
Field more Climber Stewards to help climbers minimize their impacts at popular crags.
Today, I’m asking you to join me in being part of something bigger than just climbing—to think big and help protect the lands we love.
